INDIA – TEA PRODUCTION FIRM TANTEA LAYS OFF 700 TEMPORARY WORKERS (NEW INDIAN EXPRESS)

India-based tea production firm has laid off more than 700 temporary workers in the last two months, reports the New Indian Express. Secretary of the AITUC (All India Trades Union Congress) Plantation labourers association of the Nilgiris district in India A Mohammed Gani, said Tantea sacked workers who were set to become permanent employees soon. T.V Manjunatha, managing director of Tantea confirmed that the corporation is reeling under severe financial crisis and was unable to pay its staff. He added that the corporation is incurring loss of INR 15-20 million (approximately USD 189,800 to USD 253,100) every month. Manjunatha added that to pay permanent workers, the company would require up to INR 29 million (USD 367,200), and INR 7 million (USD 88,600) for EPF (employees’ provident fund) contribution. “As of date only 40% of the workers received salary. This is why we decided to terminate services of temporary workers. The state government is taking steps to revive the corporation.”
