Dibrugarh: The All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) has accused the BJP-led state government of trying to mobilise tea garden workers for PM Narendra Modi’s public rally, to be held in Dibrugarh on Thursday, by declaring the day as a “paid holiday” for them.
In a letter issued by Dibrugarh deputy commissioner Biswajit Pegu on April 22, he asked the secretaries of Assam Branch Indian Tea (ABITA) Zone -1, Bharatiya Cha Parishad and Tea Association of India to instruct all the tea garden authorities under their jurisdiction to declare April 28 as a paid holiday in view of the PM’s visit to Dibrugarh. “...it is also instructed that all the tea garden authorities may adjust the above mentioned date declared as paid holiday on any other holiday as working day for the tea garden workers,” the letter stated.
Secretary of AITUC Assam State Committee Ranjan Chowdhury on Sunday said, “The Assam government indirectly through the Dibrugarh DC is trying to mobilise tea garden workers to join the PM rally in Dibrugarh. I doubt if the DC can issue such a notice.”
